Positive: Ruth's place in Lusaka was perfect for our needs. We were travelling as a group of four so two separate double bedrooms was ideal for us. The place is kept spotlessly clean by a maid and all the furniture, beds etc were in virtually brand new condition, clean and very comfortable. There's a massive, modern TV with a comprehensive suite of things to watch including free access to Netflix. There's also very high-speed free Wifi access. What make's Ruth's place stand out is the investment that's been put in shield guests from the very intermittent electricity supply in Zambia. Unless you stay in large hotels, most lodges don't have either standby generators or battery storage systems so when the electricity goes off you'll find yourself sitting in the dark with no TV and no Internet. We've done this a few times and it's a real drag! Ruth has invested in a good-sized battery energy storage system which charges when the power is available and takes over when Zesco decide to cut off the electricity supply. You won't find this type of technology in many places as it's very expensive to install. It meant we had TV, lights, fridge, Wifi available throughout our four night stay. She's also installed a split hob which has two electric hot-plates and two gas plates which are supplied by Calor gas so cooking breakfast without electricity was no problem. We'll definitely be looking to use this place again when we're next in Lusaka. Communication with the host was also excellent.
Negative: The only issue we had was the host asked for some money up-front before we'd even seen the property. This was a little off-putting as it felt like it could have been a scam. This is a real problem in Zambia due to high-levels of poverty. Ruth explained that she'd been messed around by a number of people who had made reservations and failed to show which had forced them to ask for part-payment up front. I'm set up to do Western Union transfers - it's really easy - so the payment issue was no big thing, just a little off putting at first.
Summary: Perfect place for a group of 2-4 people who like cleanliness, comfort, electricity and Wifi 24h!
